After Richelieu and Hansa, it's now time for a Samurai Tournament.
Schuyler offered to take care of the organization: all players interested in joining are invited to contact him sending a PM.

PostPosted: Tue Jul 24, 2007 6:28 am    Post subject: Samurai Tournament Format Reply with quote

Greetings, Samurai Players! Smile

The Tournament format will be as follows:
This is a double elimination tournament, meaning that if you lose a game, you still have a chance to win the overall tournament. Once you lose a second game, however, you are out of the tournament. Sharing a win means you advance. There are, however, a couple of special rules, described below in bold, to help offset first player advantage in two player games, and fourth player disadvantage in four player games. (The tournament will have two, three, and four player games.)

All games will have standard, visible scoring, and opening hands will be selected by the players.

The first two rounds of play will consist of four player games (one game per player per round). If, however, you are the fourth player in both of your four player games, and you lose both games, then one of you losses will be cancelled, and you will still advance to the third round.

The third and fourth rounds will consist of three player games (one game per player per round) with no special rules.

All following rounds (or matches), including the semi-final and final matches, will consist of two player games. Every two player match will consist of 1 - 3 games. If, in the first game of a two player match, the second player loses, there will be a second game, with starting order reversed. If, in the second game, the new second player loses, there will be a third game, with random starting order. If the second player again loses in the third game of the two player match, then the winner of the third game wins the round. If, during any two player game, the player moving second wins the game, then the second player will be declared the winner of that round, without any further games to be played. NOTE: If a player loses a two player round by losing three games (as second player), then this will count as only one loss, as far as elimination from the tournament is concerned. Consequently, the championship match may consist of as many as three, three game "rounds" (for a total of nine games), if both players were to enter the championship match undefeated!

To summarize the format: The tournment is double elimination, with the first two rounds being four player games, the next two rounds being three player games, and the final rounds being two player games with starting order alternating if necessary.

Mechanics will be as follows:
I will set up all games and email players passwords for their individual games. (Who plays whom will be random in the first round.)
You guys can help me tremedously by doing the following: Once a game is finished, the winner is to send me a Private Message stating that his game is finished, that he is the winner, the starting order, and the Game ID number. Within 24 hours, I will have the next games set up for those who advance. Please take your turn at least once per day, if possible.

Sign-up for the tournament will close on August 6. And all first round games will be set up by August 7.

Standings:
I shall keep posted in this forum brackets and standings throughout the tournament, to be updated upon the completion of each game for a particular round. Games will be clearly named so that players can keep an eye on the competition through the Running Games page. Wink

If there are any questions, please respond to this post or send me a Private Message.

There are no prizes, with the exception of bragging rights!

Good luck to all, and may the best Samurai win!

Schuyler

as far as i know, there is no way to specify starting order on mabiweb's implementation of samurai.

You're right, there is no way to specify starting order. If the second game in a two player match does not have the desired starting order, then that game will be ignored, and a replacement game (as many as necessary) will be started to take its place. This situation will arise, at most, only once per two player round (with the possible exception of the championship match). Statistically speaking, not that many two player games will have to be restarted, so starting order shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I'm sure the format will become clear as we get into it, but at the moment I find it a bit confusing. No need to explain it again - I'll just play the games I'm assigned to and trust you to interpret the results accordingly.

Thanks for organising this.

You're welcome, Ian.

Simply keep an eye on your Private Messages and this forum, and once we getting started (in about a week), it should all come clear! Smile

PostPosted: Mon Jul 30, 2007 6:25 am    Post subject: New rule regarding slow-moving players Reply with quote

In an effort to keep the tournament moving forward without everyone being held up by slow-moving players, the following rule has been established:

In a three or four player game, if a player takes more than three days to play, then a vote will be taken of the remaining players, and if a majority (two or more) of the remaining players wish to start a new game, then they will be rebracketed into a new game, the current game will be cancelled, and the slow player will receive a loss. (If a majority is not attained, then the remaining players are free to vote again if the slow player continues to be tardy.) In a two player game, if a player takes more than four days to play, then the remaining player may opt to advance and have the slow player receive a loss. In any game, if a player takes more than seven days to play, then the slow player will automatically receive a loss, and the remaining players will advance or be rebracketed.

Remember to move at least once a day if possible, and let your fellow players know if you will be unable to move for more than three days!

P.S. Spaces in the tournament are still available, but only for another week, so get your friends and fellow Samurai players to PM me as soon as possible! Smile

Thanks again for organizing, Schuyler. Wouldn't it be easier for all the rounds to be either two-player games or four-player games, rather than switching depending on the round?

You're welcome, wanderer.

It may be easier to have all games be for a certain number of players. We will, though, be starting an all two player tournament in January. And as for this tournament, a player will have to do well in all sizes of games to end up being named Ruler of Japan! Smile

Agreed.

Let's remind ourselves that there were so many competitors for the island back then.

Nobunaga, Ieyasu, Imagawa, Takeda and much more.

I'm Nobunaga. Who's who? Very Happy
