So in real life terms..is this expansion one you can buy? Or is it used on a normal board with modifications?

I think there were a few copies of the variant map on sale at Essen, but only as a cheap poster, as far as I know a true cardboard map has not been produced. And of course you need a copy of the original game. I have no idea about the availability of this 'poster' maps.
