I'm sorry to announce that MaBiWeb will end operations and go into permanent shutdown on October 1st 2023.
The site went online in 2006 as a small hobby project and I managed to keep it running all these years, but now I don't have anymore the time that I had in the past to dedicate to this hobby. For years now the site has been running basically unattended, without updates and maintenance. Soon the host provider is going to force the update to the latest version of PHP and the effort needed to make the site work with this new version is well beyond what I can do in my spare time, as we are at a point where patches and workarounds are not enough and a total overhaul would be required (the "PHP-Nuke" framework the site is built upon is early 2000 code, not just ancient but almost prehistoric).

In 2006 there were very few places where you could play online and making this site has been my small contribution to the boardgame community. This community has grown enormously over the past 20 years and now we have other much bigger and better sites to satisfy our gaming needs, so MaBiWeb shutdown will not be much of a loss.
I want to thank all the designers and publishers who granted permission to have their games online, and among these a big special thank you to Michael Schacht who has always been extremely supportive.
And of course a big thank you to all of you, to all the users who greatly helped in many ways: with debugging, suggestions, organizing games and tournaments, helping others in the forum, and of course playing the games!

Thanks again, and see you all elsewhere (I'm still playing of course).
MaBi

As heartbreaking as this news is, because, to my knowledge, there is no other place to play Nations online, I want to say a huge thanks for implementing the game on your site and providing me (and I guess others too) a ton of entertainment over the years. Grazie mille.

Yes, Nations will be missed :-(
We can only hope it will be implemented on Yucata or BoardGameArena.

Thanks for providing the opportunity to play so many Nations games! :) I'm sad to see this close, but yeah, I hope that Nations will be released on another site.

Is there a chance we can transfer mabi to a vps where we can run old php version?

I considered this, but it's not possible with the current host provider. It would require searching a new one offering this possibility, at higher cost, moving there and setting everything up within some kind of virtual container like docker, and then sooner or later other issues would come up (mabiweb is not on https, is not gdpr-compliant, ...)
The reality is that you can't keep a website running without maintenance work, not for long.

Many, many thanks - if there is any chance to migrate NATIONS to another IT-platform and you need financial support to do this please let us know!

What about a fundraising campaign to keep the site up? Or maybe open the code so devs can work on the PHP migration?

It's not about money.

As I said, we are past the point of just patching things up. If a dev is willing to dedicate time it would make more sense to reimplement the game on Yucata or BGA rather than taking up my old code and rebuild it, and still have a fragile small site. Long term, having Nations on one of the large sites is the way to go.

Thank you for keeping the site up and running for so long!

Could you tell me about the rights to the Nations board game. If allowed I would very much like to recreate it from scratch on my own server.

You will have to ask the designers about that. You can contact Rustan on BGG, like I did years ago, he was very friendly and very helpful.

It has been a habit for me to check how my nations go after I wake up every morning... I have so much fun here, thank you for all the things.

Thanks so much for all your efforts in keeping it live so far. I hope a suitable alternative comes along soon.
